After improvements in version 1.2, I can now switch over from the on-watch Notifications app, just remember to go into the Settings then Notifications and in Filter, select Allow Phone calls Only. I also changed Quick Launch to choose Notification Center.

NC does not handle phone calls, so you might want to set the filter to let the phone calls through.
