Toki Pona Language Pack

I originally posted about this on the Rebble Discord, but as we have this new forum I thought I should post here as-well!

The font is the UCSUR version of nasin nanpa! Downloads are available from the ci builds page
The most important strings are translated, but there is alot more progress to be made

This is so so cool. I love seeing the ways Pebbles intersect with other niches like this.

I think we’ve talked about setting up a way to serve Toki Pona as an option from Rebble’s language pack database? I thought that was exciting, where are we at with this?

The last thing I heard was @hellcp asking for permission to include it once the language database was setup.

I would to go forward with it and have it on the database! if you need anything on my side just ask

The thing we need is for me to finish the language db. I also really want it to be a part of the firmware repo, since that makes updating the language db with everything else easier (since everything is in one place). I will add Toki Pona to Crowdin soon

I don’t understand why @hellcp doesn’t seem to have permissions in CrowdIn to add it herself (she theoretically has ‘manager’ permissions which is ‘do anything’??), but I can add it.

Here’s what it wants me to fill out:

I guess the three letter code is ‘tok’, and so is the CrowdIn code; locale code might also be ‘tok-CA’ or something?

And I think the plural forms are ‘other’?

I think “other” is the best option to choose for plural, and “tok” is the official code.
I am not sure about what to enter as the locale-code, but i think “tok_CA” is the most-correct answer i can think of at this momment

OK, I think I turned Toki Pona on!

Oh, hm, looking at your screenshots above, it looks like you also have Sitelen Pona support. Which do you intend to implement in this? Toki Pona in Latin script, or Toki Pona in Sitelen Pona? Or both? Maybe Toki Pona in Latin should be tok_CA, and Toki Pona in Sitelen Pona should be tok_Sitelen?

In my private repo i was also working on trying to find a solution to this issue aswell. I was thinking of having a source translations be in Latin, and than its quite easy to automatically convert from Latin to sitelen pona (just setup a find&replace for 120~ish strings). The thing is, I’m not sure how well that would with with the crowdin workflow already setup

Ok, let’s leave the Crowdin side in Latin script, and if it can be done truly mechanically, we can try to add a script in the FW build later.

Sorry for such the long delay between progress updates for this project of mine, but i finally have some freetime for pebble stuff! I’ve just been drowning in other projects/schooling/teaching/etc…

I have almost finished a working prototype of the Latin → Sitelen Pona converter!!
I wrote it in python so it should be easy to embed it into the build pipeline. I will soon open-source it under MIT once I fix a few edgecases….. (Crowdin is quite picky with how .po files are formated, respecting PebbleOS unicode shananigans, whitespace needs to be managed quite carefully, etc…)

Once the converter is done I will start backporting my translations onto Crowdin

Screenshots below of the auto-conversion WIP

Latin version is finished now, and the .po file can now automatically be converted into a sitelen pona version! I’ll start moving all the translations over to crowdin as soon as I can update the CI builds for my repo
